Good to Great: Technology Accelerators
One of the key principles of the book Good to Great by Jim Collins. Technology accelerators are the tools and methods that enable a company to achieve its vision and goals faster and more effectively. They are not the primary drivers of success, but rather the amplifiers of the core competencies and values of the organization.
According to Collins, technology accelerators have three characteristics:
- They are carefully selected and aligned with the company's hedgehog concept, which is the intersection of what it is passionate about, what it can be best at, and what drives its economic engine.
- They are used to an end, not as an end in themselves. They are not pursued for their own sake, but rather for how they can enhance the company's performance and competitive advantage.
- They are adaptable and evolutionary, not revolutionary. They are not based on radical breakthroughs or innovations, but rather on incremental improvements and experiments that can be scaled up or abandoned as needed.
Some examples of technology accelerators from the book are:
- Walgreens' use of satellite technology to link its stores and distribution centers, enabling it to optimize its inventory and customer service.
- Wells Fargo's adoption of online banking, which allowed it to expand its market share and customer loyalty without opening new branches.
- Nucor's development of mini-mills, which reduced its production costs and increased its flexibility and quality in the steel industry.
The main takeaway from this concept is that technological accelerators are not magic bullets that can transform a good company into a great one. Rather, they are strategic choices that can enhance a company's core strengths and values, and help it achieve its vision and goals faster and more effectively.
